Organic foods for a healthy eating

Organic foods spread widely. More and more consumers buy them because they prefer have healthy meals. At the same time fields with organic farming increase. Therefore producing organic foods represents an opportunity for farmers too. And what do we really know about this topic?

The words “organic farming” are for a farming that admits only the use of natural substances avoiding fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides and other chemical substances. It is an ecosustainable production system that avoids the overexploitation of natural resources, that uses particular agricultural techniques to save lands and respect their natural cycles.

The most common agricultural techniques in organic farming are crop rotation for a rational and less intense exploitation of the land, planting new trees and hedges that give shelter to the predators of parasites and represent a natural barrier for the external pollution, intercropping that consists in cropping together different species of plants on the same plot of land to hinder the growth of parasites.

With regard to the cattle-farming the focus is on the animals that eat grass and organic forage and they do not receive treatments with antibiotics, hormones or other substances that stimulate artificially their growth and the production of milk. Furthermore farms must have large spaces so that animals can graze freely.

Organic farming is regulated by european and national laws. The whole production cycle, from the land preparation for the seeding to the final products, is checked by specialized independent government authorities that certify and guarantee products through a special mark.
