Sustainability and savings for economic activities
In all sectors, many big brands are making efforts to get eco friendly products, acting mainly on the production line but, in part, these efforts are wasted if the retail sale is carried out in shops that have never heard the word “sustainability”. Our EcoAsses takes also into account this factor because not only is counted the presence or absence of products with certification label but is also measured the real ecosustainability of the spaces, taking into account many factors including, for example, energy consumption and logistics.
Corporate Knights, the Canadian magazine of "clean capitalism", published as every year the index of the 100 most sustainable corporation of 2015. Among the twelve indicators that compose the criteria to compile it we find the amount of income generated in relation to the energy consumed, the level of innovation and transparency, management commitment towards sustainability but we do not find places objective measurements.
The problem can be seen best in the retail world or better yet in the fashion retail because it provides a good example of this lack. Often the chain to get to the single store management is too long and complex and many choices, that may seem of small relevance, end up being out of control. So the big brand that moves towards an ecosustainable production, founds himself to have stores that they deny the company's top management choices.
The conversion, even through low investment, from a traditional shop to a green ones, can save up to 30% of consumption related to lighting, up to 15% of those related to climate control and up to 30% on waste taxes.
The Technical Report of Retail Forum for Sustainability of the European Commission provides us a lot of data that allow us to better understand the opportunity of the achievement of sustainable development.
Remaining in the retail sector, 78% of energy consumption are power consumption (50% for lighting and 28% for air conditioning). Reduce power consumption by 30% of 50 and 15% of 28 means savings 19% of total electricity consumption. Considering that Confcommercio-Ref Research (an Italian institute) estimates an average cost for electricity of 4.635 €/trimester, a type store could save up to 3.500 €/year only on electricity.
Or last mile deliveries for dealers are alone the 8% of CO2 emissions of road transport. Act on sustainability of transports normally used for this task means support the pollution abatement above all in the dense areas.
The same report provides us with two other interesting data regarding the food sector: the devices for the storage of food alone affecting up to 50% of energy consumption and 5% of food waste is produced by the restaurants sector.
